How will your social media impact your SEO?

Working your social media and SEO in tandem is extremely important when aiming for the very best result for both. Ensuring that you are taking care of both sides of your SEO - organic, on site SEO and off site SEO - is a really good idea and social media is a big part of that. Below are a few different ways as to how your social media campaigns will impact your SEO overall.

Get the right kind of social media following

Getting a social media following is fantastic, but getting the right social media following is key. Having 50,000 followers is a real feat, but are those 50,000 followers getting you the right kind of traffic to your website? Engaging with the influencers in your industry may get you 1,000 followers, but those 1,000 followers can drive more traffic to your site than the 50,000.

How? Building relationships with important people in your industry will enable you to share their content - especially if you add your own thoughts to what they've written - they may then share your content. This means that not only will your followers see the quality content you've written, but theirs will too - if they've got a decent following (again, quality over quantity) then they may be interested in your social media platform and, in turn, follow you and engage with your website.

If you have a website that would benefit from guest blog posts, ask these influencers whether they would like to write a post for your site; or, visa versa. Getting guest posts on other sites that link to your website is great for SEO and can be achieved a little easier when facilitated through social media instead of cold approaching through a blogging website.

Crafting and maintaining relationships with these influencers and important people in your industry is key. Besides, if you want to succeed in your industry, it makes sense to try and engage with the people that help shape that industry, right?

Create link worthy content

Self-promoting across your social media platforms makes sense, but it isn't going to get you a lot of engagement. That doesn't mean you can't self promote, but you need to vary the kind of content you put out. This will not only to help create interest for your customers and potential customers, but it will also create 'link worthy content'.

What is 'link worthy content'? Well, it's exactly what it says on the tin: content that is worth people's time to link to, whether this is in a blog post or on their social media account. If you make your content more informational and less salesy you'll attract more people to it; people don't like to be bombarded with buy, buy, buy! It's also rather hard to share if it's something that's very specific to one company. Broader content that affects the entire industry is much easier to share and altogether more interesting. You may come back to a post that gives you information about something you're engaged with, rather than something telling you that the company installs the best windows in London.

Don't stop self-promoting - it's important to get your personal products or services out there - but don't only self-promote. Have a real mix of content, but centre it on engaging information and shareable posts.

Don't build links on your social media

It may seem like a good idea to 'build links' on your social media page, but it's definitely not. Links from personal accounts - i.e. Twitter accounts, Facebook accounts - have no authority, even if these sites have authority themselves. Also, most links from personal accounts are 'no followed', which means that Google won't pick up on them anyway, essentially making them useless.

Social media isn't a way to build links, it's a way to build a follower base - and, as previously stated, a good follower base.

Getting the right people to engage with the right content while not relying on link building from your accounts is the way to go. This is how you use social media effectively, in tandem with your SEO, to allow both to grow organically. Making the right kinds of relationships with the right kinds of people in your industry, sharing their content and giving interesting insights, and making sure you don't just put up salesy posts is the key to improving your social media presence.
